Healing Integrated

As we move through life, our mind and body can limit our capacity to participate in it. Many approaches respond by increasing control. Hintegrated proposes a different approach: Coherence before Control.

As humans, we don't act directly from our healing intent or directly upon our current human reality. We act from representations of both. We act toward a health goal (a representation of healing intent) upon a health state (a representation of current human reality).

Before choosing how to intervene, Hintegrated asks whether the health goal remains coherent with what you want your health to enable, and whether the health state remains coherent with the human actually being cared for.

Then choose an approach appropriate to the problem, act, and let the result provide feedback. As the health goal, health state, and approach are continuously refined through experience, your mind and body may increasingly support your capacity to participate in life.

Health State

Health Goal

You Act on Representations

To navigate health, we create representations.

They allow us to understand,

decide, and act

without having complete access to what they represent.

A Health Goal is one such representation.

It stands in for our healing intent.

A Health State is another.

It stands in for our current reality.

Both representations are necessary.

They give us somewhere to move toward

and somewhere from which to begin.

We make decisions.

We seek care.

We change our nutrition.

We exercise.

We rest.

We take medications.

We try different approaches.

We act.

This is control.

Control is not the problem.

But representations can be incomplete.

They can change.

What they represent can change.

And we may not immediately notice when the two are no longer coherent.

Our Health Goal may no longer represent our healing intent.

Our Health State may no longer adequately represent our current reality.

Most of the time, we notice the consequences.

Something isn't working.

We aren't getting where we hoped to go.

Our capacity to participate in life may not be improving.

Our natural response is often to try harder.

More treatment.

More discipline.

More tracking.

More optimization.

More control.

But increasing control without examining the coherence of our Health Goal and Health State can amplify the very problem we are trying to solve.

We can become increasingly effective at changing a number, treating a symptom, or pursuing an outcome without asking whether it remains coherent with the human.

Coherence before Control does not ask us to stop acting.

It asks us to remain open to feedback before, during, and after we act.

Act.

Observe what happens.

Let the result provide feedback.

Reconsider the Health Goal, the Health State, or the action when necessary.

Then act again.

The process continues.

The problem is not that we heal through representations.

The problem begins when we increase control without first examining whether our Health Goal remains coherent with our healing intent and our Health State remains coherent with our current reality.

Health Goal

Every healing journey moves toward something.

We may want to reduce pain.

Improve mobility.

Sleep better.

Change a number.

Recover from illness.

Feel stronger.

Or simply participate more fully in life.

Behind these different goals is an intent.

We call it healing intent.

But we cannot act on healing intent alone.

It must first be represented in a form toward which we can act.

We call that representation a Health Goal.

A Health Goal may be expressed through symptoms,

biomarkers, weight, mobility, energy, function, appearance, longevity, or other outcomes that make healing intent actionable.

These representations can be useful.

They give healing direction.

But the Health Goal is not the healing intent itself.

And the two may not always remain coherent.

Our Health Goal may be influenced by our experiences,

family,

culture,

healthcare,

social media,

or the world around us.

A number can become the goal.

A diagnosis can define what success means.

An appearance can become something to pursue.

A measure intended to represent progress can gradually become the destination itself.

None of these goals are necessarily wrong.

The question is whether the Health Goal still represents our healing intent.

And that question cannot be answered by increasing control.

More treatment,

more discipline,

more tracking,

or more optimization

may simply make us more effective at pursuing the Health Goal we already have.

This is why Hintegrated begins upstream.

Before asking,

How do I get there?

ask,

Is where I am trying to go still coherent with my healing intent?

The answer may change.

Our Health Goal should be able to change as we learn, experience, and receive feedback.

The problem is not that Health Goals change.

The problem begins when we continue pursuing them without examining whether they still represent what we intend healing to enable.

Before acting toward a Health Goal, make sure it still represents your healing intent.

Health State

Every healing journey begins somewhere.

Before we decide what to do,

how to respond,

or what to change,

there is already some representation of our current reality upon which we are acting.

We call that representation a Health State.

A Health State may be represented through symptoms,

diagnoses,

biomarkers,

medical history,

imaging,

vital signs,

wearables,

conversations,

observations,

or simply how we experience ourselves.

We need these representations.

We cannot perceive everything happening within a human being.

We measure some things.

We observe some things.

We experience some things.

And we miss others.

Each representation can reveal something useful.

But the Health State is not the human.

It is a representation of the human's current reality.

And that reality never stands still.

Our bodies change.

Our environments change.

Our behaviors change.

Our experiences change.

New information becomes available.

What was true yesterday may not be true today.

And yet the Health State upon which we act may remain unchanged.

A diagnosis can persist.

A measurement can become outdated.

A medical record can remain incomplete.

A wearable can capture what it is designed to measure while missing what it cannot.

Even our own understanding of how we feel can change as we notice things we had not noticed before.

None of these representations are necessarily wrong.

The question is whether the Health State remains coherent with our current reality.

Reality continually gives us an opportunity to examine that coherence.

Through what changes.

Through what improves.

Through what doesn't.

Through expected outcomes.

And unexpected ones.

This is feedback from current reality.

But we don't always allow that feedback to change our Health State.

We may continue acting from an old diagnosis.

We may focus on a number while something else has changed.

We may preserve an earlier assumption.

Or we may simply increase control.

More treatment.

More tracking.

More optimization.

More intervention.

While the representation itself remains unquestioned.

Coherence requires a different response.

When what we experience challenges our Health State, allow the representation itself to be questioned.

What has changed?

What might be missing?

What are we measuring?

What are we not measuring?

What might we no longer be seeing clearly?

The purpose is not to create a perfect representation of the human.

That may never be possible.

It is to keep the Health State upon which we act open to correction by the current reality of the human it represents.

Before acting upon a Health State, make sure it still represents your current reality.

Health Action

Once we have a Health Goal and a Health State, we act.

We may seek care.

Take a medication.

Change what we eat.

Exercise.

Rest.

Use a product.

Adopt a practice.

Use a technology.

Or try another approach.

Hintegrated calls what we do to move from our Health State toward our Health Goal as Health Action.

Action is necessary.

But a Health Goal and Health State do not automatically tell us what action is appropriate.

Different problems may require different ways of understanding them and different ways of acting.

The same action may be appropriate for one problem and inappropriate for another.

And more action does not necessarily mean better action.

What happens after we act also matters.

The result gives us feedback.

It may tell us something about the action.

It may cause us to reconsider our Health State.

It may even cause us to reconsider our Health Goal.

Before increasing action, ask whether the action is appropriate to the nature of the problem.

How Hintegrated Helps Keep Healing Integrated

Every healing journey begins with a Health State and moves toward a Health Goal.

The Health Goal is a representation of healing intent.

The Health State is a representation of current reality.

Both are necessary.

But either representation can become less coherent with what it represents.

We may pursue a Health Goal without examining whether it still represents our healing intent.

We may act upon a Health State without examining whether it still represents our current reality.

Our natural response is often to increase action.

More treatment.

More intervention.

More optimization.

More control.

Hintegrated proposes a different approach: Coherence before Control.

Before deciding how to act, examine both ends of the healing journey.

Does my Health Goal remain coherent with my healing intent?

Does my Health State remain coherent with my current reality?

Then consider the nature of the problem itself.

Not every problem requires the same way of seeing it.

Not every problem requires the same approach.

And not every problem requires the same action.

Act.

Observe what happens.

Let the result provide feedback.

And remain open to what that feedback may reveal about the Health Goal, the Health State, or the action itself.

This continuing process helps keep healing integrated with the human.

Hintegrated approaches this through three systems:

System of Health Goal

System of Health State

System of Action

System of Health Goal

Continuously keep your Health Goal coherent with your healing intent.

Every healing journey moves toward something.

That direction is made actionable through a Health Goal.

The goal may involve pain, mobility, sleep, weight, energy, appearance, biomarkers, longevity, function, or something else entirely.

These goals can help us act.

But they can also change.

We learn.

Our circumstances change.

Our priorities change.

Our experience changes.

And our understanding of what we want health to enable may change.

Change itself is not drift.

Drift begins when the Health Goal no longer remains coherent with the healing intent it was meant to represent.

A goal may also be shaped by family, culture, healthcare, social media, comparison, expectations, or the world around us.

None of these influences necessarily make the goal wrong.

The question is whether the goal still feels coherent with what you intend healing to enable.

What am I actually trying to move toward?

Why does this outcome matter to me?

What do I want health to enable in my life?

Is this goal still mine?

Or am I pursuing it simply because I learned that I should?

You don't need a final answer to what your healing intent ultimately is.

Begin with the Health Goal you have now.

Act.

Observe.

Let your experience provide feedback.

Remain open to changing the goal when what you learn suggests that it no longer represents what you intend.

Sometimes the Health Goal may become clearer.

Sometimes the goal may change.

And sometimes a goal that once seemed important may no longer need to be pursued at all.

More control doesn't guarantee the right destination.

The System of Health Goal helps you continually examine and correct goal drift from healing intent, so that what you pursue remains increasingly coherent with what you intend healing to enable.

System of Health State

Continuously keep your Health State coherent with your current reality.

Every healing journey begins somewhere.

That current reality is made actionable through a Health State.

Your Health State may be represented through symptoms, diagnoses, biomarkers, medical history, imaging, vital signs, wearables, conversations, observations, or simply how you experience yourself.

We need these representations.

They help us understand where we are and decide how to act.

But no representation necessarily captures everything about the human it represents.

We measure some things.

We observe some things.

We experience some things.

And we may miss others.

Current reality also changes continuously.

Our bodies change.

Our environments change.

Our behaviors change.

Our experiences change.

New information becomes available.

Change itself is not drift.

Drift begins when the Health State no longer remains coherent with the current reality it is meant to represent.

A diagnosis may remain while circumstances change.

A measurement may be precise while representing only part of what is happening.

A medical record may be incomplete.

A wearable may capture what it is designed to measure while missing what it cannot.

Even our own understanding of how we feel may be incomplete.

More measurement does not necessarily mean a more coherent Health State.

The System of Health State invites us to continually question the representation upon which we are acting.

What do I understand about my health right now?

What do I actually know?

What am I measuring?

What might I not be measuring?

What has changed?

What might I be missing?

Then engage with current reality.

Look at the evidence.

Have the conversation.

Make the observation.

Take the measurement when useful.

Take the action.

Let current reality speak back.

What changed?

What improved?

What didn't?

What did we expect?

What surprised us?

The result does not automatically tell us what is true.

But it provides feedback with which to question and refine the Health State upon which we acted.

Sometimes our Health State may become more coherent.

Sometimes we may discover that a representation was incomplete or outdated.

And sometimes what we learn may cause us to reconsider the Health Goal or the action itself.

The purpose is not to create a perfect representation of the human.

That may never be possible.

It is to remain open to correction by the current reality of the human being represented.

The System of Health State helps continually examine and correct state drift from current reality, so that the representation upon which we act remains increasingly coherent with what is actually happening now.

System of Action

Choose action appropriate to the nature of the problem.

Every healing journey requires action.

Action begins with a Health Goal and a Health State.

The Health Goal tells us where we intend to go.

The Health State tells us where we understand ourselves to be now.

Together, they help reveal the gap we are trying to address.

But a coherent Goal and State do not automatically tell us how to act.

Different problems require different ways of understanding and approaching them.

Some problems have clear relationships between cause and effect.

What is happening can be identified with sufficient confidence, and an established intervention may be appropriate.

Other problems require deeper analysis.

More information may be needed.

Expertise may be required.

The problem may need to be examined at greater resolution before deciding how to act.

And some problems involve many interacting factors whose relationships may not be fully understood in advance.

In these situations, we may need to widen what we consider, take a thoughtful action, observe what happens, and adapt through feedback.

The nature of the problem should determine how we look at it.

Hintegrated calls this aperture.

A narrow aperture allows us to focus on fewer variables at greater resolution.

This can enable extraordinary precision and control.

A wider aperture allows us to consider more of the human and the relationships among different factors.

It may reveal something that a narrower view could not see.

Neither aperture is inherently better.

The question is:

What aperture is appropriate to this problem?

Once the problem is understood at an appropriate aperture and resolution, we can consider how to act.

That action may involve a product,

a practice,

a behavioral change,

a technology,

a therapeutic approach,

a healthcare intervention,

or another modality appropriate to the problem.

Hintegrated does not begin with allegiance to a particular tool or modality.

Problem before Tools.

The problem should help determine the aperture.

The aperture should help determine what needs to be understood.

And that understanding should help determine the action.

Then act.

Observe what happens.

Let the result provide feedback.

Did the action produce what we expected?

Did the Health State change?

Did we discover something we had not previously represented?

Does the Health Goal still represent what we intend healing to enable?

Sometimes the action should continue.

Sometimes it should change.

Sometimes the Health State needs to be reconsidered.

And sometimes the Health Goal itself may need to change.

The System of Action helps translate a coherent Health Goal and Health State into action appropriate to the nature of the problem, while allowing the results of that action to continually inform what happens next.

Hintegrated doesn't define your healing intent or prescribe a single path toward it. It provides an approach for keeping your Health Goal coherent with your healing intent, your Health State coherent with your current reality, and your actions appropriate to the nature of the problem through action, feedback, and continued adaptation.

Join the Hintegrated Community

This isn't a community built around one definition of health.

And it isn't built around one approach to healing.

Each of us begins with a different Health State.

We move toward different Health Goals.

We encounter different problems.

We see those problems through different apertures.

We take different actions.

And our experiences give us different feedback.

Through those experiences, each of us may discover something the rest of us haven't seen.

Hintegrated creates a place to bring those discoveries together.

Share an experience.

Question an assumption.

Explore an idea.

Notice what changed.

Compare different ways of seeing a problem.

Share what you learned from what happened next.

What are you discovering about your Health Goal?

What are you discovering about your Health State?

What happened when you looked at a problem differently?

What became visible when you widened the aperture?

What became clearer when you narrowed it?

What happened when you changed your approach?

What did the result cause you to reconsider?

What happens when you apply Coherence before Control to healing?

No one person's experience gives us the whole picture.

A measurement may reveal something.

A practitioner may notice something else.

A different approach may expose something neither had previously considered.

And another person's experience may help us question something we had taken for granted.

The purpose is not to determine which modality has all the answers.

It is to become better at asking what the problem requires.

By sharing what we observe, questioning what we think we know, and remaining open to feedback, perhaps we can develop increasingly coherent representations of health and increasingly appropriate ways of acting upon them.

Think of it as humans comparing notes on healing.

Healing is personal. The learning can be shared.

Come share your notes.
